The project brief for this site of 6.1hectares, was the redevelopment of the Wilton Shopping Centre as an exciting mixed use district centre of a very high urban commercial design and environmental quality.
In developing the architectural concept and the urban design brief for the project, the multi disciplinary design team worked closely with the Planning Department of Cork City Council to ensure that the shared vision for the redevelopment of Wilton Shopping Centre would be delivered in a comprehensive way to provide people friendly places, would consider the relationship of the buildings to one another and the spaces around them and an improved and high quality mixed use District Centre. The design concept and vision was to provide and create a scheme that would be a modern meeting place with a ‘welcoming environment’ enclosed by buildings with activities that would inspire and stimulate the life of that space. The activities within the 4 blocks were outlined as follows: Block A – Retail (Anchor), Retail & Retail Services, Hotel & Medical Centre. Block B – Retail & Retail Services & Offices.
